CITY TOUR & GOURMET JOURNEY

Private city tour by bus

Budapest is one of Europe’s great cultural capitals.

Over the past few decades, Budapest has re-emerged as one of the continent’s iconic cities. Split by the Danube and many bridges connect the two parts. Meet your guide at your hotel and begin the program in Pest.

Drive along the elegant Andrássy Avenue, the “Champs-Élysées” of Budapest. Continue to Heroes’ Square, representing 1,000 years of Hungarian history. Going through the historical Jewish district admire the neology synagogue. Across the river, explore the more traditional Buda side of the city. Visit the Citadel on top of Gellert Hill and pulsate together with the city from the most iconic viewpoint. Arriving at the Castle District up on the hilltop, enjoy the panoramic view of the city from the Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church (the coronation spot of several Hungarian monarchs). Returning to your hotel driving along the riverbank you can take pictures of the beautiful Hungarian Parliament.

Relaxing in Art Nouveau  style – refreshing & aroma massage

The hotel is based on Hotel Gellért standing on the Buda side of the Danube embankment, at the Liberty Bridge. The Gellért is the most grandiose of all the baths in Budapest.

The Gellert Bath and Hotel, built about a century ago, is a very special attraction in Art Nouveau style with its indoor and outdoor swimming pools, wave bath, Jacuzzi and sunbathing terrace. The medicinal bath complex decorated with beautiful Zsolnay tiles has a complex physical therapy department and inhalation centre. The quality of the thermal water used for the treatments, that’s contained in the pools, is the envy of other medical spa hotels. The curative effect of the water sourced from the natural springs of Gellért Hill is due to its high calcium, magnesium, hydrogen carbonate, alkali, chloride, sulphate and fluorine content. It’s not surprising, therefore, that the Gellért is famous as a medicinal spa not just in Budapest but around the world!

CLASSIC MASSAGES (20 minutes)

When to opt for the refreshing massage?

  • during times of increased physical activity
  • during times of non-inflammatory joint and muscle pain
  • if you wish to regenerate and rest
  • to relax your muscles

When to opt for an aroma massage?

  • if you have issues with sleeping
  • during times of increased physical and psychological stress
  • if you are new to the world of massage

The extraordinary elegance of Budapest’s New York Cafe

Step inside the New York Café, and you may find yourself wondering if you’ve accidentally entered the Hungarian equivalent of the Sistine Chapel. It was built in the Italian Renaissance style, with sparkling chandeliers dangling from high ceilings adorned by spectacular frescoes, it’s one of the oldest cafes in Budapest, dating back 125 years.
It looks more like a lavish palace than a place to grab a slice of cake and a coffee. The menu is made up of Hungary’s most traditional desserts, including around 16 cakes, but of course, it’s not the cuisine that everyone comes here for – it’s the magnificent setting.

The Hungarian State Opera House- one of the world’s most beautiful concert venues

… opened its doors to the public in 1884 and there can be no doubt that it is beautiful inside and out. The luxuriously decorated building is rightly a masterpiece of Hungarian architecture. The theatre was built in the Neo-Renaissance style with some baroque elements. During its existence, the opera house has seen a large number of famous musicians. Among them were: Gustav Mahler, who was the chief band director for four years, the musical director Otto Klemperer, as well as Béla Bartók, and Giacomo Puccini. In terms of acoustics quality and beauty, it is considered one of the best opera houses in the world, the sound quality of the opera house takes third place after Milan La Scala and the Palais Garnier in Paris.

Seasonal dishes to feel the Hungarian spring

We are inviting you to some fining, local restaurants to introduce you to our famous Hungarian cuisine. Details are coming soon…

Until then please enjoy the recipe for this traditional Hungarian vegetable stew “Lecso”

Lecsó is a Hungarian staple made with sweet Hungarian peppers, onions, tomatoes, and paprika, which are all stewed together in a bit of smoked bacon fat (or oil). It’s at its best when made from the kind of perfect tomatoes and peppers that you find in late summer /early autumn. Lecsó is also such a beloved part of the Hungarian culinary canon that you might hear it used as a verb in Hungarian.

When preparing lecsó, the vegetables mostly simmer in their own juices, until they are soft, sweet, and a bit smoky. It’s a simple dish which is more of a ratio than a recipe, with the preferred ratio of peppers tomatoes typically being 2:1 (by weight). With such few ingredients, lecsó really benefits from using the highest quality peppers, tomatoes, and lard/bacon that you can find. Use the pale green Hungarian sweet banana peppers—which are typical in Hungary—if you can find them.

If you have to make lecsó during the winter, you can use canned tomatoes, but the result will be very different. You may want to just find someone who thought ahead during the summer and prepared enough canned lecsó to last through the winter. One reason Hungarians prepare lecsó in such big quantities during the summer is to use it as a cooking condiment in the winter—by adding a few spoonfuls to substitute out-of-season peppers and tomatoes.

Lecsó can be eaten on its own (with just a piece of bread to sop up the juices). Or with scrambled eggs (for breakfast), served with spaetzle (for lunch), alongside pasta and farmer’s cheese (in a dish called túrós csúsza), or used to dress up a roasted pork loin. You can also prepare a heartier version of lecsó by adding a link of kolbász (sliced) to the pot before you add the peppers.

It is true that peppers and tomatoes are New World crops, but lecsó is considered a wholly Hungarian dish. Like so many Hungarian recipes, lecsó—which is often translated as Hungarian ratatouille—can be made simply at home, or in more refined versions by restaurant chefs. Because it is such a versatile dish, it can pair well with a variety of wines.

PEPPER AND TOMATO STEW (LECSÓ)

INGREDIENTS

  • 100 grams (or about 6 slices) of fatty bacon (szalonna), chopped (or 4 Tablespoons oil)
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of sweet paprika
  • 1 kilogram (2 pounds) sweet peppers, cored, seeded, and chopped
  • 500 grams (1 pound) tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • Salt to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add the bacon to a pot and cook over low heat until it is rendered. Or, if you are using oil, heat it.
  2. Add the onions, cook over low heat until they are translucent (not browned), about ten minutes.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the paprika.
  4. Add the peppers, and cook for about 15 minutes (until they soften), adding a bit of water in the beginning, if needed.
  5. Add the tomatoes, and cook uncovered for about 20 minutes, until the peppers are soft and the liquid reduces a bit.

Spine training / Massage / Beauty treatments

Spine and fascia training

Have you ever wondered what exactly does “being grounded”, “pushing the floor” or “activating your centre/core” mean? We hear them quite often at tango classes, but are we really able to understand these concepts in relation to our own bodies AND to incorporate them into our movements?

Body awareness and the ability to use our bodies in an efficient way with minimum effort is key to developing a soft and relaxed, yet stable and energetic presence on the dancefloor that will ensure both long years of pain-free dancing and a high level of comfort on your personal tango journey. Spine and fascia training combines sensorimotor exercises to sharpen your senses and to discover effortless movements with special exercises to treat your fascia – the connective tissue that weaves through your entire body and whose condition is responsible for the vast majority of non-specific low back pain.

Let’s empower our senses and work together for a more balanced, free and elegant dance experience!

Our teacher – Kata

Kata, besides being an avid tango dancer, teacher and organiser herself, is a certified Pilates and PortDeBras instructor with qualifications in spine and fascia training and more than 25 years of experience in historical dancing. She is dedicated to helping her students experience the liberty of movement let it be on the dancefloor, on a mat or in their everyday lives and to share with them the vital knowledge of physical self-care for a long, active and healthy life full of dancing.

The price per hour depends on the number of participants. Please let us know if you are interested to take the class when you register.

You can expect about 3 to 8 days of rain in Budapest during the month of April. It’s a good idea to bring along your umbrella so that you don’t get caught in poor weather.

Our weather forecast can give you a great sense of what weather to expect in Budapest in April 2023.

If you’re planning to visit Budapest in the near future, we highly recommend that you review the 14 day weather forecast for Budapest before you arrive.

Travel to Hungary is once again unrestricted

The lifting of epidemiological entry restrictions means that from the 7th of March 2022, travellers can enter Hungary without the need for vaccination or immunity certificates, or any kind of test or quarantine obligation. Simultaneously, the lifting of the special rules of access for certain services and events means that vaccination certificates are no longer required for entry to indoor congresses or conferences, accommodation establishments, spas, sporting or cultural events, music and dance festivals, or outdoor events of any kind. The wearing of masks in public spaces is no longer mandatory, although some venues may still recommend their use.

Hungarian Currency

Hungary’s official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Many stores and other places accept Euro* as well. However, the exchange rates at such places often don’t follow the most up-to-date bank rates, and this is not in favour of the customers. Be prepared to get the change in HUF. We recommend you pay in Forint, in cash or by credit card. There are plenty of ATM machines where you can get forint or banks near your hotel.

Clothing

Depending on the program package you choose please, be prepared for outdoor activities – walking in the city – as well as semi-casual / elegant wear for eating out in restaurants. For the tango workshops, we recommend comfortable wear as well as bringing practice shoes. A little rock sack can is useful to carry a bottle of water and your workout dance outfit. For the afternoon milongas, you can wear a tango outfit as well as clothes that allow you to move freely. The evening milongas will be dressier and more elegant.

Adaptors

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Hungary are one of the two European standard electrical socket types: The “Type C” Europlug and the “Type E” and “Type F” Schuko. If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug it in.
